Fencing FAQ’s
For the Sunshine Coast’s unique weather conditions, the best types of timber fencing are typically hardwood species like Spotted Gum, Blackbutt, Ironbark, and Tallowwood. These timbers are durable, resistant to pests, and can withstand the harsh coastal environment.
When properly maintained, timber fences can last for 15-20 years in the Sunshine Coast weather conditions. This lifespan can be extended with regular maintenance and the use of high-quality, weather-resistant timber.
To maintain your timber fencing in the Sunshine Coast climate, it’s recommended to regularly clean it, check for signs of wear and tear, and apply a protective sealant or paint every 2-3 years. This will help to protect the timber from moisture, sunlight, and pests.

Radiata Pine takes stain or paint well, so you can make your deck any colour you like.
It’s grown to become one of the most popular decking timbers because it is one of the least expensive options and can make a great looking deck.
The “H” (Hazard) rating will tell you if its suitable for outdoor use and if posts can come in contact with the ground, we can help you choose the “H” rating for your decking, joists, posts & other components.

Spotted gum, like jarrah and blackbutt, is a good choice for bushfire prone areas.
It has a durability rating of 2, which makes it a good timber for decking. Spotted gum is often plantation grown in Australia, making it a good choice from an environmental standpoint.
It has greater colour variations than blackbutt, ranging from a pale brown to chocolate brown. Spotted gum is a dense timber that shrinks very little compared with other timbers. It has low tannin content, so doesn’t “bleed” like some native timbers do.

Iron bark timber is a dense wood with very little grain pattern or texture.
Iron bark timber is one of the hardest timbers in Australia which makes it ideal for outdoor fencing, furniture and other hardwearing products.
It has an attractive light to dark brown color and it is often used in flooring, paneling, furniture and cabinetry.

Blackbutt is another highly fire resistant timber.
An Australian native, blackbutt has a lovely pale brown colour and unlike some other native species, the colour is fairly consistent.
Blackbutt can be stained if desired. It can check (crack) if left unsealed, so should be sealed as soon as possible and resealed periodically.
